Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform en Microsoft Azure domineren met zijn drieën de public cloud. Daarnaast hebben deze drie clouds nog iets met elkaar gemeen. De clouds van Amazon, Google en Microsoft hebben nog iets gemeen, IPv6 wordt niet ondersteund. Al heeft Amazon wel één dienst waarmee klanten toch via IPv6 bereikbaar zijn voor de ‘buitenwereld’. Ook kun je met de dienst Google Cloud SQL via IPv6 verbinden.
Het valt niet alleen op dat IPv6 niet wordt ondersteund door alle drie de partijen, maar ook de mate waarin ze daar open over zijn, is zeer beperkt. AWS spant daarin de kroon en daar moet je echt zoeken om erachter te komen dat de clouddiensten IPv6 niet ondersteunen. Bij Google Cloud is het niet veel beter gesteld en is ook het gebrek aan IPv6-ondersteuning enkel in een FAQ over de netwerkconnectiviteit terug te vinden. Microsoft Azure is daarentegen wel volledig open over het feit dat IPv6 niet ondersteund wordt.
Amazon AWS
Wie op de website van AWS informatie zoekt over IPv6-ondersteuning kan lang zoeken. Aan het ontbreken van IPv6-ondersteuning wordt bijna geen aandacht geschonken. Alleen als dat echt niet anders kan wordt aangegeven dat IPv6 niet ondersteund wordt. Er is overigens één clouddienst van Amazon die wel IPv6 ondersteunt; dat is de Elastic Load Balancing dienst. Op die manier kunnen klanten diensten toch bereikbaar maken via IPv6 voor de buitenwereld.
Q: Does Elastic Load Balancing support IPv6 traffic?
Yes. Each Elastic Load Balancer has an associated IPv4, IPv6, and dualstack (both IPv4 and IPv6) DNS name. IPv6 is not supported in VPC at this time.
Q. Does Amazon Route 53 support IPv6?
Amazon Route 53 supports both forward (AAAA) and reverse (PTR) IPv6 records. However, the Route 53 service itself is not available over IPv6 at this time.
Q. What IP address ranges can I use within my VPC?
You can address your VPC from any IPv4 address range, including RFC 1918 or publicly routable IP blocks. Publicly routable IP blocks are only reachable via the Virtual Private Gateway and cannot be accessed over the Internet through the Internet Gateway. AWS does not advertise customer-owned IP address blocks to the Internet. Additionally, VPCs currently cannot be addressed from IPv6 IP address ranges.
Google Cloud Platform
Ook op de website van Google Cloud Platform is bijna geen informatie over de ondersteuning van IPv6 te vinden. In de documentatie over netwerken en firewalls is het bedrijf er echter glashelder in dat IPv6 niet ondersteuning is, maar wel schrijft het bedrijf dat IPv6 héél belangrijk te vinden.
All Compute Engine networks use the IPv4 protocol. Compute Engine currently does not support IPv6. However, Google is a major advocate of IPv6 and it is an important future direction.
Er is verder bijna niks op de website van Google Cloud Platform te vinden over de ondersteuning van IPv6. In positieve zin valt overigens wel Google Cloud SQL op dat wel IPv6 ondersteunt.
Google Cloud SQL supports connections over IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. You can connect using either protocol, or both. If you are connecting to your instance over IPv4, you must assign an IPv4 address to your Cloud SQL instance for external access to succeed. If you are connecting to your instance over IPv6, you do not have to assign an address. Each Cloud SQL instance has an IPv6 address automatically assigned to it. You are charged for assigned IPv4 addresses that are idle (see pricing). IPv6 addresses are free. To connect via IPv6, you will have to grant access to the IPv6 addresses your connections will be coming from.
Microsoft Azure
Microsoft is het meest open over de vraag of IPv6 in Azure wordt ondersteund. In de Azure Purchasing FAQ staat keurig opgenomen dat IPv6 niet ondersteund wordt. Helaas staat er wel een hoop ‘blabla’ bij, terwijl de vraag of IPv6 ondersteund wordt ook simpelweg met een simpele “nee” had kunnen worden beantwoord.

To date, Microsoft has built IPv6 support into many of its products and solutions like Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft is committed to expanding the worldwide capabilities of the Internet through IPv6 and enabling a variety of valuable and exciting scenarios, including peer-to-peer and mobile applications. The foundational work to enable IPv6 in the Azure environment is well underway. However, we are unable to share a date when IPv6 support will be generally available at this time.
